My third set of previous Wordle puzzles solved ten at a time — Wordle 41 through 50 — is now live.
I would want to think I had gone at these games as a seasoned player, solving them in 4 or 5 moves; yet there were lapses here and there!
Still, I’m enjoying my little twist to solving old Wordles with the WittyCulus Wordle Challenge I had devised π
Sans the hiccups — aka mindless, wasted moves — the overall puzzle attempts and results did not fail to deliver a good feeling of satisfaction.
Before we get into it to see what the post title is alluding to, I’ve decided to make two changes going forward…
Wordle Answers at a Glance
Just in case you’re in a hurry and want to check Wordle answers, I will now include a table for each set of games.
Links will be provided in the answer list to get to each puzzle’s game play with ease. That should be useful for readers who want the details; or are keen to know my WittyCulus style of word game solving π
Bidding Goodbye to Wordle-grams
Yup, from game 41 onwards I won’t be displaying any Wordle-gram in my posts which recount play of past Wordles.
These colourful “emojis” are most likely the initial draw for new Wordle players, what with the curiousity element plus attendant bragging rights. To be honest, I was intrigued and attracted!
But they are less significant now to me as I continue with my personal Wordle challenge, which invariably will add an extra row to each Wordle-gram.
However, omitting Wordle-grams in no way dilutes my sharing of how each Wordle puzzle was played. The benefit to me is less work doing screen captures and image cropping.
Thus cutting down on undue effort and wasted time. And channelling more attention to word puzzle solving. In a word, better focus π
Without further ado, let’s dive in now to follow Wordle 41’s game play and solution…
Step-by-Step Replay of Wordle 41 Puzzle
Guess #1
ADOBE from puzzle #40 got us started… not a typical word to begin with though.
Guess #2
Just an A revealed, not much help there. Let’s try SPLIT to check common letters (and one vowel).
Guess #3
Zilch! I’m gonna put the A back in, with UNARM.
Guess #4
Ok, one more letter shown. Now, a word like CRACK comes to mind… let’s just test that.
Guess #5
Ha ha, that CRA__ hint is screaming for me to enter CRAZY!
Easy does it π
With the S already out of the way earlier, words like CRAMS, CRAPS, CRAWS can be eliminated. As well, CRAFT, CRAVE, CRAWL all can’t fit in. Come to think of it, SPLIT turned out to be a useful move lol.
Step-by-Step Replay of Wordle 42 Puzzle
Guess #1
Was that a CRAZY start we had on Wordle 41, for this latest set of 10 puzzles, or what? Lol
Guess #2
Again, just one letter shown. But STORE is such a nice word not to guess with π
Guess #3
Good going, we got 4 hints! Now I’m feeling SOBER instead.
Guess #4
No? Hmm, we could be looking at SOWER, SORER, SOMER… any other? Let’s filter with, say, WIMPY…
Guess #5
SOWER, it is!
Now, did I overthink this one?
Guessing with SOWER at move #4 would have been just fine; plus we could have solved in one fewer step! (Or gotten the answer at the very last minute with plain straight guessing?!)
That’s not to say a filtering move like WIMPY serves no purpose though π
Step-by-Step Replay of Wordle 43 Puzzle
Guess #1
SOWER isn’t gonna yield much, I’m thinking…
Guess #2
Two hints there, can’t complain really. Now to test other vowels and the T – is there such a word as AIGHT?
Guess #3
There is, indeed! And an A is revealed. REALM looks atrractive for the next guess π
Guess #4
Not quite there… but we can now safely place the A as fourth letter. This creates possibilities like REBAR, RERAN, REPAY, etc. Will try BUNDY as a filter.
Guess #5
Hey, that Y is a dead giveaway π We settle for REPAY.
Yes, filtering can save moves when multiple solutions need to be whittled down quickly!
Step-by-Step Replay of Wordle 44 Puzzle
Guess #1
Let’s see if REPAY does anything…
Guess #2
Nope, all is quiet! I like testing for S and T, so going with MOIST this time to check 2 vowels too.
Guess #3
Hmm, T is fixed at the end; how about parking the I next to it (seeing a pun here lol)? Will use UNLIT to test for U (and also UN___ words?).
Guess #4
Indeed, the mystery word ends with IT. DIGIT fits the bill here, so let’s go with that!
Interesting elimination move there with UNLIT, don’t you think? Saying it’s bewildering may not be an exaggeration π
Step-by-Step Replay of Wordle 45 Puzzle
Guess #1
A double-vowel word like DIGIT isn’t likely to fare well, me thinks. But WittyCulus Wordle challenge mode overrides that thinking lol.
Guess #2
Just a single T showing up. Next up, SNARE…
Guess #3
It looks better now — 3 more letters revealed! And looking like a __ATE word as such. PLATE comes to mind.
Guess #4
Gosh, I forgot we’ve got an R in there! Preference for ORATE over CRATE, reason being Wordle often surprises with “exotic” words π lol
Guess #5
Such an inkling seems misplaced? No matter, CRATE must be it!
That slip-up of forgetting the R is somewhat costly. I wonder what was on my mind then, not being able to see it (and avoid that extraneous PLATE guess!)…
Step-by-Step Replay of Wordle 46 Puzzle
Guess #1
CRATE is a balanced starting word to use (with commonly appearing vowels and consonants in it!); not that I have a choice to choose another lol.
Guess #2
But only the C is locked! CHOMP next, perhaps?
Guess #3
No deal there. How about CLING?
Guess #4
Ok, we got a CL___ word to solve. U must be in there; K is likely — that’s why I’m trying BUSKY.
Guess #5
Finally, we can close with CLUCK.
Looking back, that fourth move was a wasted one! Knowing U is the required vowel and paying heed to unplayed letters would have produced the answer one move sooner!
Step-by-Step Replay of Wordle 47 Puzzle
Guess #1
Yet another unattractive word to begin with, this CLUCK from Wordle 46’s solution.
Guess #2
At least we got a K. Now for the usual tests… I’ll take STARE for a change.
Guess #3
Nice! Got S and E fixed for a S___E word to guess, with a K in one of those spaces. But MOPED popped into my head…
Guess #4
Alright, that hint of P tells me SPIKE must be it π
Bad move there on the third, so reckless of me! How on earth can MOPED ever be considered, what with the E at the wrong position?!!!
On hindsight, it would have come down to choosing between SK__E and S__KE words, e.g. SKIVE vs SPIKE. Without doubt, random play pays badly π
Step-by-Step Replay of Wordle 48 Puzzle
Guess #1
What will SPIKE do for us?
Guess #2
Nothing much, just an I. Let’s try TRAIL…
Guess #3
Slight improvement — the I got fixed lol. How about MOUND for the remaining vowels, at least?
Guess #4
Only M showed up. It’s looking like MIMIC to me.
Yay, that’s it! π
Does it look like I got lucky? With the M__I_ sequence, I didn’t (need to) see beyond MIMIC actually.
Still, it appears magical how I got from MOUND to MIMIC π
Step-by-Step Replay of Wordle 49 Puzzle
Guess #1
Not counting much on MIMIC for a good start.
Guess #2
True enough, we got nothing of a hint. TRADE is my next guess, for all its nice letters π
Guess #3
Alas, only a D present. That leaves vowels O, U to test, like in FOULS?
Guess #4
Nice to see those vowels locked in place. Now for some elimination… G, H in case of a DOU__ sequence; Y in case there are _OUDY words; B, H, P as possibilities for _OUND. HYPHY seems ok.
Guess #5
And we are rewarded with a P to make POUND π
Not too shabby there, I’d say. HYPHY wasn’t a wasted move but served us well!
Step-by-Step Replay of Wordle 50 Puzzle
Guess #1
POUND, let’s hear some noise from you…
Guess #2
No can do?! I’ll try a favourite then: RAISE.
Guess #3
Ok, got an A locked. The floating I could only go into the 4th position for a _A_I_ sequence, so how about CALIX?
Guess #4
Nice to see the X revealed; and its correct place is in the middle. MAXIM is a clear choice then.
Good play! No wasted moves this round π
Overall, An Enjoyable Session
This third round of playing one 10-game set of past Wordles has been enjoyable, if not more.
While I tried to stick to basic but tried-and-tested solving approaches, at times I’d allowed myself to get “creative”. Perhaps I did that to break the monotony of a somewhat “clinical” method — they say a Gemini needs variety; more like distractions imho!
At 50 games done, I’m still a far cry from clearing all the “old” puzzles prior to the day I started playing Wordle live.
Since I haven’t been actively pursuing puzzles on the Wordle Archive, I don’t know when the next ten (or more) games will be played in one sitting. We’ll have to see; hopefully, that will be soon π
